Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! - A Gangster Love Story

Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! (transl. Once upon a time in Mumbai again) is a 2013 Hindi crime drama film directed by Milan Luthria and written by Rajat Aroraa. It is the sequel to the 2010 hit film Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, which was loosely based on the lives of real-life gangsters Haji Mastan and Dawood Ibrahim. The film features Akshay Kumar as Shoaib Khan, a character inspired by Dawood Ibrahim, Imran Khan as Aslam, his loyal protégé, and Sonakshi Sinha as Jasmine, an aspiring actress who becomes the love interest of both men.

The film was released on 15 August 2013, coinciding with India's Independence Day. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances of Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha, but criticized the screenplay, direction and music. The film was also a commercial failure, grossing 90 crore (US$13 million) worldwide against a budget of 85 crore (US$12 million).

Plot

The film begins with Shoaib Khan (Akshay Kumar), a powerful don who has taken over the underworld after killing his mentor Sultan Mirza (Ajay Devgn) in the previous film. He is assisted by his best friend Javed (Sarfaraz Khan) and his loyal henchman Aslam (Imran Khan), whom he picked up from the streets as a child. Shoaib is a flamboyant and ruthless leader, who often eliminates his rivals and enemies without mercy.

One day, he meets Jasmine (Sonakshi Sinha), a struggling actress who works as a flower seller. He is instantly smitten by her beauty and innocence, and offers to help her achieve her dreams. However, Jasmine is unaware of his true identity and profession, and believes him to be a businessman named Rajeev. She also develops a friendship with Aslam, who secretly loves her.

Meanwhile, Shoaib's arch-enemy Inspector Sreenu (Mahesh Manjrekar) plots to bring him down with the help of Rawal (Abhimanyu Singh), a rival don who wants to overthrow Shoaib. They plan to assassinate Shoaib at a public event where he is invited as a chief guest. However, their attempt fails as Shoaib escapes with the help of Aslam and Javed.

Shoaib decides to propose to Jasmine and take her to Dubai with him. He also reveals his true identity to her, hoping that she will accept him despite his dark past. However, Jasmine is shocked and terrified by his confession, and rejects him. She also tells him that she loves Aslam, who has been supporting her throughout.

Shoaib is enraged and heartbroken by Jasmine's betrayal. He confronts Aslam and accuses him of cheating on him. He orders him to kill Jasmine or else he will kill him. Aslam refuses to obey him and runs away with Jasmine. Shoaib vows to kill them both for their disloyalty.

Aslam and Jasmine hide in a warehouse, where they confess their love for each other. They are soon surrounded by Shoaib's men, who attack them. Aslam fights them off bravely, but gets wounded in the process. He manages to get Jasmine out of the warehouse and into a car. He drives away from the scene, but Shoaib follows them in another car.

A chase ensues on the streets of Mumbai, where Shoaib shoots at Aslam's car repeatedly. Aslam tries to evade him, but loses control of the car and crashes into a wall. He dies in Jasmine's arms, while Shoaib watches from a distance.

The film ends with Shoaib walking away from the scene, regretting his actions and losing his love and friendship.

The film was initially titled Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Again, but was later changed to Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! to avoid confusion with Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express, which was also scheduled to release on the same date.

The film was shot extensively in Oman, Dubai and Mumbai. The film's music was composed by Pritam, while the lyrics were written by Rajat Aroraa. The film's soundtrack album was released on 17 July 2013 by T-Series.

Reception

The film received mixed reviews from critics. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 40% based on 10 reviews, with an average rating of 4.8/10. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 46 out of 100 based on 4 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews".

Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN gave the film 2 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! is an overlong melodrama that never quite takes flight because its characters are shallow and its plot is contrived. Its a shameless attempt to cash in on the success of the earlier film." Anupama Chopra of Hindustan Times gave the film 2 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! is an exercise in futility. Its a bloated vanity project for Akshay Kumar that squanders its potential." Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave the film 2 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! is a gangster flick gone awry. It is more talk than action. And when it does get around to delivering the action that it promises at regular intervals but does not deliver until it is too late in the day, it goes completely overboard."

On the positive side, Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film 4 out of 5 stars and wrote, "On the whole, Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! has a powerful second half that tilts scales in its favor. The culmination to the movie is outstanding. Additionally, Akshay Kumar springs a big surprise with his performance." Raja Sen of Rediff.com gave the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! is an entertaining film with some fine performances. It may not be as good as the first one, but it has its moments."

Box office

The film had a decent opening at the domestic box office, collecting 14.2 crore (US$2 million) on its first day. However, it faced stiff competition from Chennai Express, which was running in its second week. The film's collections dropped significantly in the following days, ending its first week with 49.5 crore (US$6.9 million). The film's lifetime domestic gross was 60 crore (US$8.4 million), making it a flop at the box office. The film also performed poorly in the overseas markets, grossing 30 crore (US$4.2 million) worldwide.

Awards and nominations

The film received several nominations at various award ceremonies, mainly for Akshay Kumar's performance and Rajat Aroraa's dialogues. The film won two awards at the Stardust Awards 2014: Best Actor in a Negative Role for Akshay Kumar and Best Lyricist for Rajat Aroraa for the song "Ye Tune Kya Kiya". The film also won the Best Dialogue award at the Zee Cine Awards 2014 for Rajat Aroraa.
